Social Media Videos

Tomorrow night I am presenting to a networking group here in Hamilton. Since I won’t have a chance to show all the videos, I wanted to collect them here and share them with the rest of the world. The first one I found while doing my research for the presentation. Some of the screen captures I use in my presentation, but it just doesn’t do it justice to leave it as that. The other three were shown during a presentation at Social Media Week Toronto (SMWTO) on Privacy. Thanks to Mark Hayes at Hayes eLaw for those. Once I finish the presentation, I’ll upload that too.

Rogers Cable Volume Too Low

I have one of those really simple digital boxes from Rogers Cable. (Model: Explorer E940). When I play a DVD through my TV, the volume doesn’t need to be much higher than about 14 out of a range of 0-63 (I don’t know either…just go with it). When I watch anything through Rogers, I almost always have to have it up to the max. So, I decided to do what any technically minded person would do…I Googled it.

I should note that I have already programmed my remote to control my TV’s volume control.

I found a great discussion here: http://forums.redflagdeals.com/archive/index.php/t-752470.html One of the first things it suggests is under the Audio Range in Settings, change it to “Narrow”. Turns out, mine is already there. Still not very good. Further down, it talks about Audio Control = “Fixed”. Turns out mine was set to “Variable” and as soon as I changed it, I had to turn down the volume! Not much mind you, but I noticed a difference right away. It’s not as good as when I watch the DVD, it’s still better than having it all the way up and not being able to hear anything.

So even though the post was almost 2 years old, it was still relevant. Thought this might help some of you out there without Netflix. 😉

My Week Ahead – Part 1

Let me tell you kids, it’s gonna be a doozy!

There are so many cool things going on this week, that I thought I should share some of it in case you want to come along for the ride.  It’s just the type of girl I am! There’s so much, I have to break it up into a couple of posts. Here’s the first dose.

Saturday, April 16

9:30 pm – Stupid o’clock in the morning: The Retro Road Show

Remember those video dance parties that you had in junior high/high school from Much Music and the like? Well, you can still enjoy them! DJ Thomas Hall (@djthomashall) spins the tunes like he does every Friday at 5 pm on Boom 97.3. For those of you that used to go to the Joker back in the day, yes, this is the SAME DJ Thomas! Make sure you follow him on Twitter, as well as my girl Gwen who looks after the Twitter and Facebook promotions for the events (@retroroadshow). It’s held at the Dovercourt House, north of Dovercourt and Bloor Street West. It only comes around once a month and in honour of Gwen’s birthday, the theme is Hair Bands. There will be much headbanging! Check out more on the events, including cover here. I don’t miss any if I possibly can.

Monday, April 18

7pm – 10 pm: Tweetgasm

I went to one of these last month when I was invited by Rannie (@photojunkie). It’s an opportunity for a bunch of people with similar interests to get together and have a few drinks, a good conversation in person and listen to some great music. Come down to the Gladstone on a usually boring Monday and end the day off right! Details here.

That should at least keep you going until early next week. In my next post, I’ll talk about Books, Code, Fashion and maybe an Easter Bunny. Stay tuned!

Bonus: If I Had An Hour To Live

Bonus topic: you only have an hour to live.

Interesting how these things flow when you’ve had about the equivalent of a bottle of wine and you’re on the TTC late at night on a Saturday…

If I had an hour to live, I would make a video diary in which I would tell that only have one regret in my life and that I’ve lived my life to the fullest. I would ask my dear friends to look after my brother Ravi since I wouldn’t be there to do it and give thanks for having each of them in my life. The list would be extensive and I’d give thanks for something that I remember them for, no matter how insignificant it might seem.

No regrets, but would probably spend the hour listing all the things I didn’t get to do and suggest that my friends take one of them and do it for me. All of this would take at least an hour. Have a lot to be thankful for.

Bridget Jones: New Year Edition

Number of alcohol units over the last two days: Too many to count

Number of delectible finger foods at Pre-NYE birthday party: Too many to count

Number of Gingerbread houses: -1

Number of karaoke songs sung: 1

Number of pre-NY workouts: 1

Number of NY text messages from unknown senders: 2

Had good evening of training a few nights ago. Think I’ve finally figured out that form. Went to pub and ate salad (good). Wasn’t ready to go home, so went to #loserkaraoke at Tequila Sunrise with a few tweeps, @AlexBlom, @Dan_L, and @photojunkie. Missed @jpuopolo unfortunately. Hope he and his wife are going well on the #babypuopolo watch! She was due today, so as soon as there is extended radio silence, am sure that we’ll know. Hadn’t done karaoke in a while, but glad I stuck around. Got home late, but fun times figuring late night route home. Thankful for 24 hour TTC service outside my door.

Next day, got gear together and went to friend’s for pre-NYE birthday party. Lots of finger foods, good wine, Rock Band, polar bears and singletons. One of my New Year’s Resolutions is to break more boards at training. Took three tries to break the gingerbread house, so either am a great builder and should consider career in hurricane/tornado prone areas or am complete weakling. Even caused hand to bleed. Either way, am #toughcookie. See it here.

Had amazing time at NYE party with good friends and had interesting voyage home which involved a bus and 2 cabs, only paid for one. Great photos can be seen here.

Still have not heard about dream job, but with holidays, could be delayed. Expect to hear Monday or Tuesday.

Not making too many resolutions this year. Too many disappointments. Chose “hope” instead of “resolve”. Therefore, HOPE to (in no particular order):

  1. Lose weight and lead healthier life
  2. Learn to knit and will have completed at least one project this year
  3. Cook and read more often
  4. Get dream job
  5. Find love, even if only temporary
  6. Procrastinate less.

Not a lot to ask, is it? Wishing everyone a very happy and prosperous new year. Let it be better than the last.

"Don’t Blink"

I stumbled upon this while using my new browser, Flock, and looking for another video that a friend recommended.  How can I resist “Ninja” and “Doctor Who” in the same search result??? It’s from one of the spookiest episodes that I’ve seen.  Really good stuff.
